Rocke Malware | Sneaky Monero Miner Can Disable Cloud Security

There is a new malware out there to watch out for. Dubbed the Rocke Malware, this form of cryptojacking has the ability to disable cloud security software so as to illicitly mine for Monero (XMR) undetected.

Rocke Malware Discovered

Cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks is the team behind the worrying discovery. It published a report yesterday saying that the hacking goes by the disguise the Rocke Group and is targeting public cloud systems.

If downloaded, the malware takes administrative control, uninstalls cloud security products and then inputs a code that mines for Monero cryptocurrency.

It’s exceedingly clever; the system follows procedures detailed on the service provider’s user manual on how to uninstall the Could Host Security product. By doing this, it doesn’t arouse suspicion and goes undetected.

What is Rocke Malware?

The software has the ability to uninstall five different cloud security products on Linux servers. These cloud security systems are the product of major Chinese cloud developers Alibaba and Tencent, and the malware looks to be selectively targeting them.

To mine for Monero without detection, the Rocke Malware attacks vulnerabilities in Apache Struts 2, Oracle WebLogic, and Adobe ColdFusion applications, and then downloads a shell script named a7.

Rocke can also kill any potential rival hackers trying to infiltrate the system. When it first arrives on the system, it avoids detection because it acts without malice.

Monero (XMR)

Monero continues to be the chosen favorite of hackers. This is because its network has a high focus on privacy and user identities are concealed. It is incredibly difficult to trace transactions to the users on the Monero network. For this reason, the crypto is said to be chosen by criminals to send and receive illegal money.

According to a recent study, hackers have mined 4.32% of the total XMR in circulation. Further, a McAfee study published in December showed that incidents involving crypto mining malware grew over 4,000% in 2018.

Monero “Mistake”—Now You Can’t Pay for Fortnite Merch with Monero

If you were excited about Friday’s news about Monero (XMR) being accepted on the Retail Row store, well, sorry to break the bad news, but according to CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, it was all a “mistake.”

Oops, but also… how?

Monero Mistake

Over the weekend, the CEO of Epic Games—the creators of 2018’s biggest game, Fortnite—admitted that adding Monero as a payment method on the games online store was a “mistake.” And not a ‘Now that I have reflected on my actions I believe I chose the wrong course of action’ mistake, but an ‘Oops! Pressed the wrong button by mistake’ mistake.

But what a mistake to make. It’s hard to understand how this could have happened accidentally.

Added on Friday, the option to pay for merch using the controversial coin has since been removed from the store.

No More Monero

Let’s catch you up. As stated, Epic Games developed, possibly, the world’s most popular game—ever—called Fortnite. You’ve probably never heard of it. It is so popular, that the company opened an official merchandise store named Retail Row in December.

Now, CEO Sweeney is saying that Monero had unintentionally entered the store’s payment options “somewhere along the way.” (That’s a tad ambiguous!) Nonetheless, the site’s staff removed the payment option over the weekend.

Nothing Adds Up

Monero is definitely one of the more controversial of the cryptos out there. Its protocol has a heavy emphasis on privacy whereby transaction identities remain completely private, as such, the coin has been linked on several occasions to illicit activities and payments.

Friday’s choice to partner with Monero was a head-scratcher for that reason, especially considering the younger audience who enjoy Fortnite and its merchandise. Sweeney, on his Twitter account, continued today:

“[A] lot more work is needed on volatility and fraud-proofing before bringing it to such a broad audience that includes younger gamers.”

Rumors

Yes, that makes sense. But again how do make such a massive mistake? Rumors do abound that Epic Games had partnered with cryptocurrency payment processor GloBee on the Monero deal. But this has been denied by Sweeney. He also wants to drive home the fact that “Epic doesn’t have any cryptocurrency partners and aren’t in any crypto partnership discussions with anyone.”

When this payment optioned popped up on Friday, XMR gained close to 10% on the excitement. It has since lost a lot of those gains, which is pretty understandable.

So there you have it. You can’t buy merch anymore on Retail Row using XMR. That very brief three-day window has now closed. What a Monero mistake to make.

Monero (XMR) Now Accepted at Fortnite Merch Store!

Just as 2017 was the year of cryptocurrency, 2018 was the year of Fortnite. And now those two worlds are colliding. Recently word spread that the Fortnite merchandise store is accepting Monero (and XMR alone) as a form of payment.

Monero Accepted At Fortnite Merchandise Store

Fornite became immensely popular last year, enough to open up Retail Row, an official supporting retail store. And while some are questioning the choice (XMR has previously been subject to crypto jacking), it’s an overall win for the crypto space. After all, the more crypto adoption from universally recognized companies, the more traction the crypto industry will gain, not to mention the attention individual virtual currencies will gain.

Monero (XMR) broke the news on January 1st, 2019, via Twitter. The tweet garnered 183 retweets and 659 likes.

Many were in favor of the news.

Things to Note

For those who want to purchase Fornite merchandise using Monero (XMR), Riccardo Spagni says you have to “go to the regular checkout,” and not to use “Apple Pay or PayPal’s checkout.”

Impacts on XMR

Two days after the news was announced, XMR is down 3.97%. However, that might not have anything to do with the news, as the majority of cryptocurrencies are in the red zone today, January 3rd, 2019.

The Takeaway

Whether you are a fan of Monero (XMR) and Fortnite or not, it’s difficult to argue that this isn’t a monumental move for the crypto space. After what was a relatively dismal year for the industry (in comparison to 2017), this integration may be what the industry needs. And who knows, maybe other official stores will follow in Fortnite/Retail Row’s footsteps.

What do you think? Are you going to purchase any merchandise? Moreover, would you have rathered Retail Row accept virtual currencies like Bitcoin (BTC) or Ripple (XRP)? Let us know what you think in the comments below! And happy gaming!

Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Monero (XMR) Rise from the Ashes

The cryptocurrency market is rebounding today, after a brutal couple of weeks on the market. Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Monero (XMR) are among the coins making the biggest surge this morning.

Recently, the market hit its year-low, and many of the coins reached their yearly lows as well.

Let’s take a closer look at these three coins and their latest developments.

Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by its total market cap, hit its year-low this week, sinking below $180. ETH hadn’t been under the $180 price point since late June of 2017.

Developers are steadily working on solutions to improve the scalability of the Ethereum ecosystem, but no solution has yet to be proven extremely effective. However, these things take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all.

At press time, Ethereum is trading at $204.12 a coin, up 18.22% in 24 hours. It remains unclear what specifically boosted the price of ETH.

Litecoin (LTC)

Litecoin, the seventh-largest cryptocurrency by its total market cap, also hit its year-low price this week. However, LTC has received a boost this morning and is currently seeing percentage gains above 10%.

Next Monday, Bittrex will be launching the LTC/USD trading pair. The US-based cryptocurrency exchange announced this yesterday, and this very well may be the cause of Litecoin’s price lift. Bittrex also announced the USD and TRON (TRX) pairing group, and TRX is currently seeing a price lift above 14%.

At press time, LTC is trading at $54.49 a coin, up 10.45% in 24 hours.

>> Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Derivatives are Ready to Go

Monero (XMR)

Monero, the ninth-largest cryptocurrency by its total market cap, is also seeing a boost this morning. However, it remains unclear why the price of XMR has boosted.

It may just be that investors are riding the green wave and diversifying their portfolios.

At press time, XMR is trading at $113.69 a share, up 12.30% in 24 hours.

Where do you think Ethreum, Litecoin, and Monero will go from here?

BitGo has Added ZCash | Two Very Secure Bodies Join Forces

BitGo has added ZCash: The “world’s most secure Crypto wallet” startup BitGo has added Zcash (ZEC) coin to its wallet and custodial services as the coin has a strong focus on privacy and security – two very agreeable features for BitGo.

The announcement was made by the company today.

“Zcash is a compelling digital currency that many hedge funds, exchanges, and customers have been asking for because of its emphasis on privacy,” BitGo CTO Ben Chan said.

BitGo already houses Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and Bitcoin Gold. Zcash will be its seventh addition to its network.

BitGo has Added ZCash

Zcash was formed in 2015 by Zooko Wilcox and claims to be “the first open, permissionless cryptocurrency that can fully protect the privacy of transactions”. It does this by offering two addresses to its users. One type is an unshielded or transparent address which is publicly viewable. Transactions using these addresses are viewable by everyone on the network. However, the second type uses the so-called ‘z-addresses’ and these addresses are shielded meaning users can transfer coins without revealing details such as names, locations, and amounts associated with the transaction.

Because it expresses an emphasis on the private transferring of coins, Zcash has come under scrutiny for being “too private” and has been accused of being a criminal favorited coin similar to Monero, precisely because of its privacy features.

BitGo

However, BitGo shares a similar emphasis on privacy and it seems the company appreciates this aspect if Zcash. It is a network that targets institutional investors, offering them instant wallets that have three keys: one held by the company, one held by the clients, and one held on behalf of the user by a third-party as a “Key Recovery Service” (KRS).

According to its website; “BitGo pioneered multi-signature technology, key recovery solutions, zero confirm transaction services and other safety and usability protocols that have enabled businesses to use digital currencies.”

ZCash Price Today

The news seems to be good for Zcash as the coin has risen today .84% and currently stands at $219.72 USD. It’s not exactly astronomical but any rise is a good rise in the cryptocurrency world!
